Wayne Dyer

In our brief twenty-five minute conversation, Dr. Wayne Dyer quoted no less than ten authorities. From Rumi to Mother Teresa, I listened with rapt attention as he spoke on the nature of mankind and the human condition.  I had my own agenda.  WithThanksgiving just around the corner and the holidays approaching, I thought itwould be good to talk about ”harvest”. It’s a good concept, I thought and so I proposed we explore what wereceive as the rewards of our laborious efforts.  He opened up like a fresh bag of hot popcorn. “Sell your cleverness and purchase bewilderment, he quoted Rumi right away. “ Live in Awe!  That’s what highly functioning people do. They focus on solutions, have great passion and see the beauty and joy in life.”  He went on,” Many of our forefathers abandoned pessimism.  Theyare included in my book, The Wisdom of the Ages.“ Dr. Dyer’s book is a distillation of to the wisdom from sixty teachers who have walked before us.The short, three to four page chapters are titled by such words as: patience, knowing, triumph, inspiration, leadership, solitude and others that offer insight into the higher realms of living fully.  Each chapter opens with a quote from a notable writer who has imparted wisdom through the ages.” You see, he continued without missing a heartbeat, “Oscar Wilde was right, “ Weare all living in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.“

“How do you spendyour life Liz,” he asked me and before I could utter a single word hecontinued.” Our minds are so powerful that we become what we think.   What we put our attention on is whatbecomes our reality.” A common theme and title of one of his seventeen books is, You’ll See It When You Believe It. “Michelangelo said it best, he tells me, “when he stated that the greatest danger is not that our hopes are too high and we fail to reach them, but that they are too low and we do.”  We have to shift our attention and raise our standards. Let me tell you a story. I just came back from Lourdes,” he told me,” a place where people gather every evening from March to November.  At 9:15 in the evening, 15,000 –20,000 people come together to experience miraculous events.  There is no organization promoting this.  There is no dress rehearsal.  Everyone comes together in a pilgrimage.  I was among a sea of people who were believers, expecting to heal and feeling extreme gratitude.  Experiencing this was a great gift.  And events like this are happening throughout our world.  Millions ofpeople are shifting their attention to see the positive.  When I returned to Paris after two weeks in this magnificent environment, I turned on the television to discover the unrest in the Middle East. The entire world wasfocused on a few people throwing stones at each other.  Well let me tell you, there are so many people who are living in a different world view. But we don’t know because most of us are choosing to focus on the negative. We can choose what we focus on.  Wecan see the world through eyes of gratitude or we can see the world through eyes of lack.  Many people suffer because they want more, need more, and guess what happens, they always feel they don’t have enough.  We have choices. Let’s just say that instead of saying, give me more, we say how may I serve.  What happens then is… we are served, all the things we need and more. The universe is always giving you exactly what you ask for.”

Whew, I guess I wanted this because I sure did get a lot of information.  I never knew one word; harvest could make such a difference in my life. Wayne Dyer sure knows how to give.  He has amassed a huge amount of knowledge and it flows freely. He had so much to say that I lost track of time and then, realizing our interview was coming to a close, I asked him to share his thoughts on Thanksgiving.  “That’s easy,” hesaid.  “It’s really two words.”  Thanks and Giving. This is the holiday whenwe are reminded to have gratitude for all we receive.  And giving, that’s the key to this holiday.  St. Francis of Assisi said it sosimply.  It is in giving that wereceive.”  Enjoy this year’sharvest as you receive all that you are able to give. Happy Thanks Giving.
